News El Niño Is Building. What Could It Mean for the UK?

El Niño & the UK

Sep 08, 2026
The UK is heading into the 2026/27 Storm Season with an unusual weather signal developing in the Pacific.

The Met Office is warning that the current El Niño could become one of the strongest on record. While El Niño does not directly predict individual storms, it can increase the likelihood of wetter and stormier conditions across north-west Europe, including the UK, during autumn and early winter.

For the insurance market, this is an important early warning.

And the UK is already seeing the cost of adverse weather rise.

In 2025, UK insurers paid £1.2 billion in weather-related property claims, according to the Association of British Insurers. Storm damage to homes alone reached £244 million, while flood claims rose to £312 million.

The question, therefore, is not simply:

Will we see more storms?
It is:

Are insurers and businesses prepared for the losses they could create?
A major weather event can trigger far more than physical damage. Flooding, roof damage and infrastructure failures can quickly develop into business interruption, supply chain disruption and complex claims.

The storm may last hours.
The consequences can last months.

At Advanta, we believe effective claims response starts before the claim arrives.

Because when the warning signs are there, preparation should not wait for certainty.
