Anirood's Story

May 18, 2023
Anirood was happily pursuing a career in supply chain management when he became aware that his qualifications and technical knowledge were in demand in the loss adjusting sector.

Anirood is a qualified mechanical engineer and has a master’s degree in logistics and supply chain management. Having worked in industry for almost seven years, he was disappointed that he had not used his full breadth of skills and knowledge in any of his job roles. It was a chance discussion about this with a colleague that led Anirood to investigate loss adjusting as a potential career option.

He was amazed to discover that loss adjusting required all the knowledge and experience he had gained studying for his qualifications and working for Coca Cola and Zafco FZCO. Not least, his technical expertise as a mechanical engineer, and his ability to review contract terms and negotiate with suppliers as a procurement professional. He would also get to continually develop his skills working across multiple industries working to resolve different scenarios and complex claims.

Having now completed his first six months with Advanta we took the opportunity to catch up with Anirood to ask him about his move into loss adjusting and his experience so far.

Apart from technical knowledge and qualifications, what other skills do you think are important when considering a career in loss adjusting?
“Strong project management and communication skills are vital as you need to be able to manage multiple stakeholders. I took steps to improve these skills before applying for loss adjusting roles., as well as to improve my report writing and presentation skills. I, also, visited many websites and social media pages of loss adjusting firms and insurance brokers to read about specialty insurance claims scenarios and how insurance and claims handling work.
I later learnt that Advanta also liked the fact that I am naturally inquisitive, able to make independent decisions and have an eye for detail.”

What support was given to you in your first six months with Advanta?
“I was encouraged to immediately begin my Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) qualifications and given weekly study days. I was delighted pass the CILA Certificate qualification and am now working toward the Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) Certificate CILA Diploma qualifications. Eventually, within say five years, I want to complete my CILA and CII Associate qualifications, and then I will be able to describe myself as a Chartered Loss Adjuster.

To give me practical experience, I was paired with a senior loss adjuster and shadowed him on all new claims instructions that involved mechanical engineering and logistics related claims. I, also, shadowed other colleagues involve with property and engineering (including marine) related claims. This ‘on the job’ experience has been invaluable in helping me learn how to conduct the claims inspections, how to interact with the insured, insurers, and insurance brokers. and how to prepare the interim and final reports.

Having gained knowledge and confidence, I was then given my own assignments but with structured support. Having these learning experiences and knowing that I have such strong support within Advanta is now enabling me to take more responsibility for engineering and complex claims.”

What do you like most about Advanta?
“It is a supportive and positive working environment, where I feel that I have the opportunity to contribute toward team goals and to achieve my own career aspirations.”
