A catastrophic earthquake magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale has been reported on the island on Saturday, 14 August. The epicentre was about 12km (7.5 miles) from the town of Saint-Louis du Sud, as stated by the US Geological Survey (USGS). At least 1,297 have lost their lives, and more than 5,700 others have been injured, according to public records. In addition, there is considerable damage in the epicentre zone and more distant areas, and a month-long state of emergency has been declared on the island.

Considering the damage reported on the island already, alongside those not yet uncovered, a high number of claims are expected.
