Advanta Bulletin – Brazil floods

May 07, 2024
Severe storms have triggered flooding in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Local authorities have labelled this as "the most critical flooding recorded in history". Consequently, a state of calamity has been declared in Rio Grande do Sul, leading to the displacement of over 15,000 people. More than 30 people have lost their lives, and another 60 are reported missing. Additionally, approximately 500,000 individuals are currently facing challenges due to power and water shortages across the state. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families affected by this tragic event.

The storm's impact has been felt across nearly 150 municipalities in the state, resulting in the destruction of homes, bridges, and roads. Given the extensive damages reported and the likelihood of ongoing adverse weather conditions, significant losses are anticipated.
